Getting Back on the Tracks

Dating all the way back to New Testament times, athletic illustrations and metaphors have been used to describe faith-related ideas. But in this post, I don’t want to just use a fitness metaphor to bring out a faith-related truth. Instead, I want to show the importance of the same principle in both realms. 

So often those of us who have been into fitness for a while get caught up in so many small things. The human body and the way to strengthen it is incredibly complex, but it is also relatively simple. I know this sounds strange, but it is because about 20 percent of the knowledge, when applied correctly, produces about 80 percent of the results. If you eat the right foods in the correct amounts, lift progressively heavier weights, and get enough rest and sleep, then you will see a drastic difference in both your performance and your everyday life. 

Despite this, we often get caught up in talking about carb cycling, fasted training, micronutrients and drop sets. While these are all things that intermediate and advanced weight lifters should know about, they are far from the most important. And because we consider ourselves “advanced,” we sometimes begin to slack on the main things, such as eating right, because we think we’ve learned the “hacks” and the ways to mitigate the damage caused. We need to take a step back and re-focus on the basics. 

This is the same in our faith. We are all wired differently, and all have things that, once we’ve been a Christian for a while, we begin to gravitate towards. For some of us it’s helping the homeless, for some it’s talking about end-times prophecy, for some it’s taking a stand on hot-button issues in our societies. But we, too, need to get back to basics. If we forget the grace shown to us through Jesus, or lose the love that we have for others, then we’ve missed it. We may be doing good things, but good things with a misdirected heart can spell trouble.
