Patience: Another Lesson L̶e̶a̶r̶n̶e̶d̶ Learning

“So Jacob served seven years for Rachel, and they seemed to him but a few days because of the love he had for her.” -Genesis 29:20

Patience. Oh, how long it takes to attain. I struggle with patience at work, at home, and in reaching my goals.

Jacob loved Rachel so much that the years turned to days in his heart because of his love for her. This is a perfect picture of patience the way it should be. He had a goal that he cared about, so he was willing to put in the time and effort to achieve it.

Lately, God has been using my strength training to teach me more of this elusive virtue. I recently made the switch to a more intermediate weightlifting routine that demands more of my body. I can’t run this program endlessly, and I need to take time off here and there to allow my body to recover. I am more patient because I know that it leads to my achieving my goal of getting stronger. I used to die a little inside if I missed a workout. The idea of a “de-load week” was appalling because I would LOSE ALL OF MY STRENGTH AND MUSCLE!!! Alas, that is not true and the more time that passes the more I realize my need to take a few days off here and there. This is translating to my daily life as well. I am not always in such a rush to do things because the Lord is teaching me that some things are better cooked like crockpot chicken than Hungy Man dinners.

As Christians, we have some goals to reach, and one of them is to become more like Jesus. That definitely does not happen overnight. Be patient and let the Lord do what He wants in His time. Rest in the fact that He knows what He is doing.
