Review: Mike Matthews and Bigger Leaner Stronger

For around a year now, I have been following a weightlifting program called Bigger, Leaner, Stronger by Mike Matthews. The plan comes from his book of the same name, which also includes a solid nutrition plan, the science of energy balance, and countless other helpful information concerning physical fitness. This book is for men, but there is a book for women as well called Thinner, Leaner, Stronger. Mike does a great job of keeping his advice tailored to both men and women and explains any differences in training and why they are different.

 I have done a lot of reading on these topics, and this guy is definitely the best in my experience. He gives some of the most straightforward advice and information I have ever found with his only real agenda being that you improve your fitness level and life. He also runs a site called Muscle for Life and has a brand of supplements called Legion. I listen to his podcast every week and never stop learning new things and receiving new workout, nutrition and lifestyle tips. I have also tried several of his supplements and they are the best I have used. If you are looking for someone who really knows their stuff and/or a good weightlifting routine to follow, this is your guy. 

He has recently come out with a more intermediate routine as well that is more periodized if you are someone who has some background in weight lifting.  In essence, his routines are a 5 day a week body part split routine that focuses on the 4-6 rep range heavy compound lifts with some supplementary work for neglected muscle groups. The plan is also tailored for people who can only workout  3 or 4 days a week.  

The nutrition plan is a flexible dieting approach that focuses on energy expenditure and calories in vs. calories out. Be warned that he does use a little language at times, especially on his podcast, if that bothers you and that there are before and after pictures of people with little clothing on his sites and possibly books. 

If you have any questions after reading the books, his website covers pretty much anything you would want to know. If you still have questions, this guy actually responds to every single email that you send  or comment that you post on his blog, despite being one of the best sellers in the Health and Fitness category. Seriously, check this guy out of you don’t have something you are doing already, or maybe even if you do!
